The Revolutionary Student Union (RSU) has recently ignited controversy due to our support for Palestinian armed resistance and activism on the campus of the University of Connecticut. First of all we would like to remind our supporters that RSU is not an explicitly communist organization, we support the struggles of oppressed people all around the world for liberation and stand against capitalist exploitation but do not align ourselves with any specific revolutionary tendencies.

On October 31st, activists placed posters around the University of Connecticut campus to express our solidarity with the Palestinian resistance, and we would like to use this statement to further explain our position here: We condemn the University of Connecticut for its complacency in the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people at the hands of Israel with the support of the United States. The University of Connecticut has only released hollow statements of support for those “suffering in both Gaza and Israel” as well as condemnations of the Palestinian resistance as “terrorists”, this is a dishonest framing of the ongoing fight for liberation in Palestine which only serves to perpetuate harmful ideas against genuine struggles for progress and democracy today.

The Portland Chapter of RSU was also recently in the news (10/13) for taking revolutionary initiative on reorganizing an initially canceled march in solidarity for Palestine. An RSU activist who helped organize the event was quoted as saying: “The real reason. Because Palestine is facing a genocide,” he said about his reason for organizing the rally. “We have to fight against it. We have to show our solidarity with the people…. People have to show solidarity with the oppressed masses. Fight against it. While we can’t do anything personally for Palestine in their country, we can show their solidarity with them.”

Fighting back against oppression and colonization even through violent means is not terrorism but a legitimate act of self defense forced into violent struggle through continued acts of displacement, killing and silencing at the hands of the oppressors.

The RSU expresses full solidarity with the Palestinian people and resistance fighting against Zionist aggression. We believe all people have the right to resist and call on the youth to support this cause and join the Revolutionary Student Union!
